c. Second-gear Operation

(1) In second gear operation, the overdrive clutch and low-range clutch are engaged. Torque from the engine is transmitted hydraulically through the converter to the splitter planetary carrier. The carrier shaft is splined to the converter turbine, causing the splitter planetary to rotate at turbine speed. In 3360 models, torque from the converter
turbine is transmitted to the splitter planetary through the turbine output shaft. The forward end of the shaft is splined to the turbine and the rear end is splined to the splitter planetary carrier.

(2) The overdrive clutch is engaged and holds the splitter clutch housing and integral sun gear stationary. Rotation of the splitter planetary carrier drives the attached pinions around the stationary sun gear. Rotation of the pinions overdrives the splitter ring gear and the attached splitter output shaft.

(3) The low-range sun gear is splined to the splitter output shaft. Engagement of the low-range clutch holds the low-range ring gear stationary. The rotating low-range sun gear drives the pinions within the circumference of the stationary low-range ring gear. The pinions, attached tothe low-range carrier, drive the carrier and integral output shaft.
