BMW 3 Series Enthusiasts Companion
Jeremy Waltons new BMW 3 Series Enthusiasts Companion is the only book youll ever need about BMWs most popular line. It discusses the roots of the 3er in the Neu Klasse and 2002, as well as all renditions of the series itself, including E21, E30, E36 and the latest E46. All body styles and engines are represented, as are the many variations needed for BMW's diverse markets world-wide.
Walton takes you from the inspirational 2002 through the early phases of development of the first of the 3 Series. Although he provides in depth coverage of the 320i that came to North America, extensive information is provided about the 316, 320 and 323i which made such an impact in Europe. Although Americans experienced lackluster performance from their Seventies 320i models, Walton extensively delves into the many competition successes of this and subsequent 3'ers, all of which are studied at length in their many guises.
The Enthusiast's Companion tells you how to identify the various models and helps you to decide which engines, bodies, models and years are best suited to your needs. Do you want the high-revving edginess of the E30 M3, or would you be better suited by an almost equally quick, but less peaky, E36 model 328is?
Every page of every chapter of this book is intended to help you to better understand and enhance the enjoyment of your 3 Series BMW.

Performance Figures 1975 - 2000
BMW is conservative in its performance claims, referring to urban consumption statistics in Europe for its fuel consumption claims whenever independent figures are not available. Figures for the US feature all domestic measurements, including the US gallon. Figures for European specifications have been converted to UK Imperial measurement, which is divided by a factor of 1.2 to equal US mpg.
Taking the European figures generation by generation, we find that the original 3 Series only had enough straight-line performance to compare with its 2002 predecessors in European 323i guise. Then, it was at the cost of sub-20-mpg six-cylinder consumption.
The four-cylinders of the original series offer a better balance of fuel consumption to performance, and the 320i/4 also received plaudits for its 200,000-mile durability during our research. However, the American E21 and E30 four-cylinders were not notable performers; and it says a lot for the loyalty of US Bimmer owners (and the quality of the product) that they stayed with the Roundel when more tempting alternatives lurked in many rival showrooms. BMW owner loyalty, shown by repeat purchasing, is at its highest in the six-cylinder ranges worldwide in 1999.
Of the second (E30) edition, the performance interest will naturally center on the M3 and its various Evolutionary descendants. Still, we've noticed how quick the 325i was versus some M3 derivatives. Unfortunately, we still do not have figures from the 238 bhp/2.5-liter M3.
The European and American E36 325i/328i series, whether in coupe or sedan form, could be as fast as an original M3, according to some independent testers in the US. And they returned about the same mpg overall and had a similar maximum speed to all but the previous E30 Evolution/220-bhp M3. Yet the 325i or 328i of the 1990s did all this a lot more smoothly than an E30 M3 could ever do: that is true automotive progress.
The author is glad to acknowledge the weekly British magazine, Autocar (formerly Autocar & Motor) and Haymarket Motoring Publications Ltd. for providing us with 1975–99 statistics. Top European speeds come from two sources: those defined as “best” by Autocar or those that the author obtained at private test tracks when testing with electronic or fifth-wheel devices for Motor Sport or Performance Car.
European fuel consumption figures include those from the test track; the average driver is unlikely to obtain worse consumption. Weights are those quoted as “curb.” All the European figures quoted using Autocar's internationally respected test procedures are subject to copyright. In the US, we have averaged figures mostly from Automobile, Road & Track, and Car & Driver. We gratefully acknowledge the high standards of those three magazines in performing the independent tests that most US and UK magazines avoid. There were, however, such wide variations in US test results that averaging seemed the only fair way to give potential buyers an idea of anticipated performance.

*Average of independent magazine sources. US residents, multiply by 1.2 if you want to convert an Imperial mpg result into US mpg. **Famously timed by Autocar at 162 mph with European 155-mph speed-limiter obviously inoperative! ***Car & Driver ran both their routine and extended (35,000) mile 3-liter M3s through their test procedures and returned much quicker results than the rest of the American hack pack. The average figures quoted are fairer for the private buyer's expectations today, but for the record, C&D recorded 0–60 mph in 5.5 seconds in both sessions. They recorded 0–100 mph in a staggering 14.6 seconds and went an unsurprising 14.2 seconds at 98- or 99-mph terminal speeds for the standing 1/4 miles. Car & Driver was the only magazine we could find that ran an automatic-transmission 3-liter M3 through the strip procedures and returned 0–30 mph in 2.6 seconds, 0–60 mph in 6.7 seconds, 0–100 mph in 17.1 seconds, and a 15.3-sec/95-mph ¼-mile pass. Both top speed (137 mph) and average fuel consumption (24 US mpg) were reportedly unaffected. Curb weight was up 72 lbs, at a reported 3,304 lbs.

Unbeatable BMW Eighty Years of Engineering and Motorsport Success
Unbeatable BMW Eighty Years of Engineering and Motorsport Success
by Jeremy Walton
Unbeatable BMW is the comprehensive history of BMW competition from 1917 through 1997. The first edition of Unbeatable BMW became a cult classic among enthusiasts, but its coverage was restricted to the years 1959-79. Now, this astounding story has been massively expanded by the author in a hardcover format, richly illustrated in 4-color. Jeremy Walton weaves together the tale of BMW's engineering know-how, daredevil drivers, inimitable team leaders, and the cars they championed and drove to the winner's circle.
BMW's envied reputation and the whirling-propeller badge are such legends as the prewar BMW 328 sports cars and the 1990s 200-m.p.h. McLaren/BMW V12s. Unbeatable BMW also gives first-hand tales of BMW's aviation and motorcycling deeds.
Included are gripping accounts of the preparation and track-side action for such emotive winners as the diminutive BMW 700 coupes to the 1800 "Tisa" and 2002s. Walton sweeps through the 1970s "Batmobile" 3.0 CSL lightweight racing coupes, then explores the best-selling 3-series in every race category. Walton also covers the unexpected success of the 5- and 6-series, the latter against Jaguar.
Unbeatable BMW recalls the establishment of BMW's Motorsport division, and the thrill of the first M-Powered cars. From M1 onward, the author details the burgeoning M-brand, how MPower won the first world title for a turbocharged car (1983), and the years as the backbone of European Formula 2.
The book is packed with details to thrill the heart of the most ardent BMW fan, from meticulous photo captions listing car, driver, and race date, to six appendices covering the competition cars since 1960, drivers' accomplishments, and powerplant specifications.
In short, if BMW has raced, rallied, or flown their products in competition, Unbeatable BMW gives the full, behind-the-scenes story in this compelling account of the marque's motorsports history.
